The Summer I Turned Pretty is a typical young-adult, summer, beach read. Overall, I thought the book was cute, but it didn’t wow me. I think if I read this as the intended audience (pre-teen/teenager) then I probably would have loved it! But as a 30 year old, it was really hard to relate to the characters and their problems. I wanted to read it because it was made into a Hulu adaption and Taylor Swifts re-recording of “This Love” was in the trailer, but then I only watched about half of the series and got bored – LOL!
This story is about Belly’s summer in Cousins Beach where she stays every year with her mom, brother, her moms BFF and her 2 sons, Jeremiah and Conrad. Jeremiah is basically “golden retriever energy” in human form while Conrad is more serious and hard to read.
Growing up, Belly has always had a crush on Conrad but the boys are always treating her like a pest (and I’m not going to lie, sometimes she totally is). This summer she’s taking things into her own hands and if Conrad isn’t interested, she’s going to find someone who is! While her plan to meet a cute boy was successful, it still didn’t feel quite right since she still had lingering feelings for Conrad.
Also, Belly and her “BFF” Taylor didn’t actually seem like best friends to me. Their relationship kind of confused me – why would you invite your friend to the beach with you for a week when you really didn’t want her to be there?
Idk!! I feel like my review is a little harsh, because it wasn’t really bad, I just didn’t vibe with it, I guess!
