The Nature of Fragile Things is a historical fiction that was actually quite suspenseful mixed with an empowering female storyline!
This book mostly takes place in 1906 San Francisco. Sophie Whalen answers to Martin Hockings newspaper advertisement in search of a wife and new mother to his child. She says, “Ain’t gotta ask me twice!” and packs her bags to head from New York to California. However, when she meets her new husband, she finds that he’s not quite what she expected, but she is so in love with his daughter and they have the sweetest bond.
Chaos ensues when the Great San Francisco Earthquake and fire completely destroy the city. But the night before, Sophie gets an unexpected visitor with ties to Martins sketchy past. What she has found out takes her on a wild ride of love, resiliency, and friendship.
I found the first half of the book to be pretty exciting and the end was great too, but around the middle-end of the book, the story was a little stale and repetitive. Still overall an amazing book and I would certainly recommend it!
4⭐️’s from me!
Also, this book had sooo many good quotes! I’ve added a few of my favorites below!
“It is the nature of the earth to shift. It is the nature of fragile things to break. It is the nature of fire to burn.”
“I’ve often wished I could turn back time and do things differently, but maybe it’s better to start anew than to go back in time and hope you have the courage and wisdom to make different choices.”
“When people are thrown into an abyss and together find their way out of it, they are not the same people. They are bound to one another ever after, linked together at the core of who they are because it was together that they escaped a terrible fate.”
