Author Highlight- Rupi Kaur

I read Rupi’s first book “Milk and Honey” a few years ago while on maternity leave with my first son and I instantly fell in love with her writing.

Poetry was never something I have really ever enjoyed as an adult. I never felt like I could relate to most authors, but Rupi’s writing spoke to me.

I quickly picked up her second book “The Sun and Her Flowers” and liked that ever better than the first.

When I saw Rupi was coming to perform in Denver, I knew I had to see her so I brought my mom along who knew nothing of Rupi’s work. We both had the best time at her show and walked away speechless.

Seeing her perform her poetry on stage and have it come to light was simply art. The way she engaged with the audience and let her personality show through was amazing. In a room with hundreds of other people it felt truly intimate.

Rupi is an inspiration. Rupi was raised by immigrant parents, her dad worked constantly to keep food on the table for them. When she was in college, she decided to SELF PUBLISH her first book. Each book has been written and illustrated completely by her.

Rupi’s work touches on love, loss, trauma, healing, femininity, and migration.

She struck fame through becoming a viral social media sensation and now has sold over 8 million copies of her books, has an amazon featured show and has done two world tours. She is also been on #1 best seller lists all over the world.

Her most recent book “Homebody” in my opinion is the best yet. I personally love the simplistic style of her writing. With such few words, she tells so much.

Her writing is reflective, intimate and relatable.
Her story is so raw.
She is magic.
