Shellby’s Review

I think my hopes may have been too high for this one! I’m a sucker for books set in New York City – especially books that encapsulate the glitz and glam of the city. But this one just fell short for me. It wasn’t bad at all, just not great.

The main character, Katey, is rather dry and lacks any sort of depth that you’d expect as the narrator. It was difficult to really understand her motivations throughout the book, as I was having a hard time connecting to her. However, I did enjoy the beginning of the book, where we learned about Katey and Eve’s friendship!

When Katey and Eve meet Tinker Grey on New Year’s eve, I thought the book was going in a direction where Tinker would eventually be stuck in a love triangle where he would have to choose between the two girls. But after the three of them were involved in an accident, it felt like Tinker had “made his choice” and Eve moved in with him. Though, it didn’t seem like they really liked each other? To me, it seemed like he wanted to take responsibility for the accident since Eve was hurt, by giving her a nice place to live and all the nice things that go along with being rich in NYC. And it seemed like Eve just wanted to feel like she “won” Tinker.

For a large chunk of the book, Tinker and Eve were overseas and were only briefly mentioned as Katey navigated her life in New York City. She made a bunch of new friends, tried out a few jobs, and even started seeing a new man!

The storyline about Tinkers Godmother was really weird to me – she just kept showing up at the oddest times and then wasn’t even his actual Godmother! No wonder she didn’t like Eve…

I really wanted Katey and Tinker to hash it all out, but they just danced around their feelings in order to present themselves well in front of the other. There was a little resolve at the end between them, but not in the way I was expecting.

I realllllly wanted to like this book, but overall, it just fell flat.
